Superintendent's Letter re: Restricted Access to Schools

March 12, 2020
This is an important update regarding visitors to our schools, and, use of our school buildings by outside agencies.

Beginning tomorrow, March 13th, access to our school buildings will be restricted to faculty, staff, and students only, until further notice. Parents and guardians who drop off or pick up students will not be permitted to enter the school building, beyond the security vestibule. Please be advised that the elementary before and aftercare programs, afterschool extra help and enrichment programs and the credit recovery program will run as scheduled.  For additional information please contact your school’s principal.

Upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences have been postponed until further notice.  In addition, as of tomorrow, March 13th, use of our schools by any and all outside agencies will be suspended until further notice.

Please note that South Country has NO CONFIRMED cases of COVID-19 reported to us.  This decision is being made out of an abundance of caution concerning our students, faculty and staff and the South Country community. If the district becomes aware that a student or staff member is diagnosed with COVID-19, it will immediately notify parents, guardians and staff.  We will continue to be vigilant in our efforts to help prevent the spread of this illness and to protect the health and safety of our school community.

Thank you.

Coronavirus Comments from Dr. Giani – Board of Education Meeting of 3/11/2020

Dr. Joseph Giani, Superintendent of Schools for South Country Central School District commented that Suffolk County currently has 6 confirmed Coronavirus cases.  These cases include individuals from:

  • Greenport (1)
  • Lake Grove (1)
  • Farmingville (1)
  • Ronkonkoma (3)

While the South Country Central School District does not have any confirmed case of COVID-19, we continue to closely monitor this fluid matter, and we are following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control, the New York State and Suffolk County Department of Health and the New York State Education Department.

I want you to know that in addition to closely monitoring the matter, the District continues to take steps, such as…

  • Performing routine cleaning… and disinfecting throughout its schools.  The District is currently following Centers for Disease Control suggested cleaning protocols.
  • We are reviewing and updating our response protocols and…
    • following SED’s “managing Emergency Health Care and Communicable Diseases In a School Setting Manual.
    • BOE Policy 5691 also addresses Communicable Diseases
  • Reviewing and monitoring absenteeism… currently faculty and staff is slightly elevated and students are slightly lower, but no significant change with either.
  • Our school nurses monitor students coming to the health office.  They send notes home to parents making them aware of even flu-like symptoms during this time of year, and to keep children home when they are ill.

As another precautionary measure, we have canceled field trips to places off Long Island and to events on Long Island where there is little control of attendees, visitors, and/or cleaning protocols.

Trips to schools outside of our school district will more than likely be permitted, but will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

These precautionary measures will be in effect through spring recess (which is April 10th), and may tighten if circumstances change.

In addition, all school districts recently received a directive from the New York State Department of Health that students and staff returning from currently impacted countries or regions of impacted countries will be required to be quarantined for fourteen (14) days upon their return from one of these areas.  As of today, those areas include: China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, and Japan.

Therefore, if students or staff are planning to travel to one of these areas, we request you notify the district by contacting your school’s principal as soon as possible.

We continue to monitor this fluid matter on a daily basis, and will provide updates as needed.

Coronavirus Comments from Dr. Giani – Board of Education Meeting of 2/26/2020
Dr. Joseph Giani, Superintendent of Schools for South Country Central School District commented that much in the news today is the Coronavirus Outbreak. As you may know, there are no known cases in New York State and the CDC website still reports the “immediate health risk is considered low.”  However, that does not mean we should not keep the virus on our radar so we are prepared in the event of a local outbreak. Currently our school nurses monitor students coming to the health office reporting similar symptoms of Nausea. Our nurses send notes home to parents making them aware of even flu-like symptoms during this time of year and to keep children home when they are ill, and follow up with those students who do not return to school. We are currently preparing a letter to go home to parents with more information about the virus. The letter will describe symptoms, what is known, how it spreads, and prevention.  We expect that letter to go out sometime in the next few days.
