Bellport High School junior Naja Palmer has earned international recognition after receiving the Rising Scholars Award in the Lumiere Scholars Essay Competition. Palmer’s essay on artificial intelligence was selected from more than 2,100 entries submitted by students in 104 countries. As part of the honor, she also received a $500 scholarship to participate in any Lumiere Research Scholar Program.

Palmer said she was surprised and excited when she learned she had won. “I was shocked,” she said. “It was unexpected and I was really happy that I won.”

Palmer said she entered the contest to strengthen her college applications while exploring a topic that interests her. She hopes to attend Stony Brook University after graduation, where she plans to study computer engineering and minor in filmmaking.

In addition to her academic achievements, Palmer is a standout student-athlete and an active member of the Bellport High School community. She competes on the winter and spring track teams, has earned All-League honors in the 55-meter and 100-meter events and is a member of the 4x200 relay team. She is also an accomplished musician and performs with the school’s orchestra as a cellist. She recently participated in the New York State School Music Association Solo Evaluation Festival, where she earned an A- on a challenging Level 5 piece. She has also previously participated in student council and on the basketball team.

Outside of school, Palmer stays involved through dance and by assisting with audiovisual support at her church.
