Bellport High School’s Peer Culinary Arts program brings students together

Bellport High School’s Peer Culinary Arts program is transforming learning experiences for students by creating inclusive classroom environments where students of all abilities learn, collaborate and grow together.

Now in its second year, the program follows the same curriculum as a traditional culinary arts course while intentionally integrating students from special education classes with their general education peers.

The idea for the peer elective program originated with Jessica Prush, assistant director of student support services, as part of a course offering review. Prush proposed the concept of peer electives, and the district worked collaboratively to bring the vision to life.

The program has had a meaningful impact on the school community since its launch.

“This program has changed the climate of our building,” said Assistant High School Principal Heather Giacomin. “It creates an inclusive learning environment where differently abled students engage and collaborate alongside their peers. It goes beyond academics; it’s about building friendships and opening the door to new social opportunities.”

In addition to Introduction to Culinary Arts, the district also offers peer elective classes in Studio in Art and Global and Gourmet Foods. Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 school year, peer elective offerings will expand to include Creative Crafts and Unified Physical Education.

The Peer Culinary Arts program reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to inclusion, equity and meaningful educational experiences for all students.
