Bellport High School student-artist earns notable awards

Bellport High School senior Alana Cornacchiulo has earned multiple prestigious honors for her artwork. Most notably, five of her pieces were honored at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, with two advancing to the national level for adjudication. In addition, she received best in show at the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association’s High School All County and Scholarship Show.

“I am very excited about it,” Cornacchiulo said of her success.

The high school senior, who has been passionate about art since kindergarten, submitted her art portfolio and five distinctly different pieces to the Scholastic competition, with each earning recognition. Her jewelry piece, “Shield Away From Those Around You,” a creatively crafted set of press-on nails, was awarded a Gold Key and will advance to nationals. Also moving to the national level was her “Parallel Play,” a painting of her father and his favorite cat, which she originally gifted to him for Father’s Day.

Her drawings, “To Be Human” and “Glowing Gloss,” earned Silver Key awards, while her fashion piece, “The Skin: The First Line,” received an honorable mention. Cornacchiulo said she was especially excited that her fashion piece earned recognition, since it was her first time sewing with leather.

“Glowing Gloss,” a still-life depicting glass bottles illuminated by light, also earned a best in show at the SCALA competition.

Cornacchiulo plans to study psychology in college this fall while continuing to pursue art. Beyond the art studio, she is a dedicated student-athlete, competing on the varsity golf team and previously in varsity tennis. She is also a former chamber choir member, as well as an active member of the National, Science, English, Art and Math honor societies, and serves as treasurer of the National Honor Society.

The South Country School District congratulates Alana and wishes her continued success at the Scholastic Art and Writing national awards.
