Bellport High School senior launches first Muslim American Heritage Month celebration

Driven by the belief that meaningful change requires action, Bellport High School senior Samaita Chowdhury made a lasting impact on her school community by inaugurating the school’s first Muslim American Heritage Month celebration.

“We are a minority in the school, and I felt that it was important for all students to have representation,” said Chowdhury.

With the support of social studies teacher Romelo Green, Chowdhury organized a successful Muslim American Heritage Month panel discussion that brought students together for an open and thoughtful dialogue. During the event, Muslim American students shared personal perspectives on their faith, life and school experiences, helping to dispel misconceptions and foster greater understanding among their peers.

Although Chowdhury will graduate in June, she hopes the celebration will continue in future years. “I am already thinking about who to pass the torch to,” she said.

Chowdhury plans to study business and political science in college. She is an AP Scholar who has participated in student council, earned a First-Generation Recognition Award through the College Board National Recognition Program, is a member of the National Honor Society and has earned an AP Seminar and Research Certificate.
