How is One-to-One Technology Used in the Classroom?
A one-to-one Chromebook program refers to the initiative where each student in a classroom or school is provided with their own individual Chromebook for educational purposes. This setup allows for greater access to digital tools, resources, and learning platforms, and it can transform the way teaching and learning happen. Students can access a wide range of online learning platforms, such as Google Classroom, iXL, and interactive websites tailored to their curriculum. This helps meet individual learning needs, whether for enrichment or remediation.
It is important to note that no technology can replace quality instruction. Chromebooks, and any form of technology are merely one of the many tools our teachers use to enhance and provide greater access to curriculum and curricular resources.
At South Country, all students in grades Kindergarten through 5 have a Chromebook cart in their classroom, which allows for students to utilize a device at their teacher's discretion. Chromebooks generally do not go home with students unless the teacher deems it necessary. Students in grades 6-12 are issued a device to be used while on school grounds and brought home daily. Students are also issued a charger and are responsible for bringing a charged device to school every day.
How are Student Devices Monitored?
Monitoring and filtering student devices, especially in a one-to-one environment like Chromebooks in the classroom, is crucial for ensuring safety, academic integrity, and appropriate use of technology. All student devices are monitored and can remotely be controlled to implement device settings, install applications and configure policies.
All school devices and accounts are subject to filtering software to restrict access to inappropriate content through the use of third party software. Keywords, graphics, and site searches are also monitored and filtered. Inappropriate activity is reported to building and district administration. These measures are in place on all devices, regardless of their physical location (home, school, public Wifi, etc). All activity is tracked, meaning all website traffic, all documents created, and every action completed is tracked, monitored and reported. Students are expected to keep their passwords safe and are responsible for actions completed on their accounts.
Technical Support
Students can reach out to any teacher and ask them to submit a ticket for device repair. If available, a loaner device will be issued while repairs occur. The replacement device becomes the student's assigned device while the repairs occur or for the duration of their time in the building if a replacement is necessary.
High School: Students can bring their device to room 150 before 9am for tech support.
Middle School: Students can bring their device to the Main Office and it will be brought to Mr. Austin's attention.
What if the device is lost or stolen?
Families are asked to sign a Mobile Device Issuance Agreement. The agreement states:
It is the Students responsibility to report any problems with their equipment to include operation, damage of any kind, loss or theft. The Student and Parent are responsible for any damage and/or loss of the device. There will be a $306.00 charge for a new device.
The Student also agrees to return above equipment upon request or withdrawal from the South Country Central School District.
