World Languages
Bienvenue! Benvenuti! ¡Bienvenidos!
Welcome to the exciting world of language learning! At South Country Central School District, we believe that learning another language is more than just acquiring vocabulary—it's a gateway to understanding other cultures, building global connections, and preparing for success in a diverse and interconnected world. In today’s society, being limited to only one language can be a barrier. Multilingualism opens doors both personally and professionally.
World Language study begins in Grade 6 with our Language Exploratory Program, where students have the unique opportunity to sample the three languages we offer for future study: French, Italian, and Spanish. This exposure helps students make an informed decision about the language they wish to pursue in-depth starting in Grade 7.
In alignment with New York State (NYS) requirements, students are expected to complete at least one unit of credit in a World Language by the end of Grade 9. This typically includes a Checkpoint A exam, which is a requirement for earning a high school diploma. However, our district goes further, encouraging students to continue their language studies through Checkpoint B and beyond, helping them become confident and competent global citizens.
