Middle School Social Studies

6th Social Studies  (SS6 ):  1.0 Unit
This course is taught as part of the 6th grade Humanities course. Students will study the geography and history of the Eastern Hemisphere, including the development of cultures, civilizations, and empires; interactions between societies; and the comparison of trends in government and economics.  It also incorporates some elements of other social sciences.  This course will focus on conceptual understanding, fostering student inquiry, collaboration, and informed action and integrating content and skills purposefully as outlined in the Social Studies Framework.

Requirements: tests, quizzes, homework, projects, writing assignments, and projects. 

 

7th Social Studies  (SS7 ):    1.0 Unit
The NYS Education Department has set the 7th grade curriculum as the first part of a complete study of United States history.  The course begins with the European and Native American roots of Colonial America and continues through the economic, political, intellectual, cultural and military development of the nation through the Civil War.  The development and/or reinforcement of skills such as writing, reading, research, and document analysis are emphasized. This course will focus on conceptual understanding, fostering student inquiry, collaboration, and informed action and integrating content and skills purposefully as outlined in the Social Studies Framework. The curriculum is focused on instructional and assessment strategies reflected in the New York State Social Studies Framework, inquiry approach, and historical thinking skills.  The examination of historical themes and trends are also examined in this course.

8th Social Studies  (SS 8):  1.0 Unit
The NYS Education Department has set the 8th grade curriculum as the second part of a complete study of United States history.  The course begins with the Reconstruction of the United States after the Civil War and continues through the economic, political, intellectual, cultural and military development of the contemporary era. This course will focus on conceptual understanding, fostering student inquiry, collaboration, and informed action and integrating content and skills purposefully as outlined in the Social Studies Framework.

The examination of historical themes and trends are also examined in this course.
