Dual Language & English as a New Language (ENL)
ENL Vision Statement
The South Country Central School District is dedicated to ensuring that all English Language Learners (ELLs) and Multilingual Learners (MLLs) acquire the academic English language skills necessary to thrive in school and beyond. Grounded in research-based practices and aligned with both state and federal mandates, our ENL program promotes equitable access to rigorous, standards-based instruction that supports language development across all content areas.
Our vision is to cultivate a learning environment where emergent bilingual students are respected, supported, and empowered to reach their highest academic potential. We recognize and celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity as assets that enrich our classrooms and communities. ENL instruction is guided by best practices in multilingual education and second language development, and is differentiated to meet each learner’s unique proficiency level and academic background.
Through integrated and stand-alone ENL services, teachers scaffold instruction in all language domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—while making academic content accessible and meaningful. In partnership with families and communities, we strive to prepare our multilingual learners to become confident, capable, and college- and career-ready individuals.
Dual Language Program
Side-by-Side Dual Language Program
At South Country Central School District, our Side-by-Side Dual Language Program is an enrichment program that offers a dynamic and inclusive educational experience for students in grades K–5. Rooted in New York State English as a New Language (ENL) regulations, the program is designed to support English Language Learners (ELLs) while promoting bilingualism and biliteracy for all students.
In our side-by-side model, classrooms are composed of students whose home language is English and those whose home language is Spanish, learning together in an integrated setting. Instruction is delivered in both English and Spanish, with language alternating by content area based on instructional units. This unit-based approach supports deep academic development in both languages and fosters cross-cultural understanding.
This program reflects our commitment to nurturing globally aware students who are bilingual, biliterate, and culturally responsive.
