"Around the World" with Family Math Day
On Saturday, March 13th, the South Country Central School District held its fifth annual Family Math Day, and it was a great success. Approximately 300 students in grades pre-K through 5 attended Family Math Day, each accompanied by an adult chaperone. Planning for this day of math fun began in November and many people worked hard to make it a success once again.

We received donations from the South Country Teacher Center and South Country PTA’s. Over 100 volunteers; students, staff members, and parents, helped to make this day a success. A special thank you to the Family Math Day Committee members for making this day possible; Connie Havens, Aimee Volk, Nicole Albrecht, Maryanne Brandi, Jill DeRosa, Fran Dunton, Corinne Figueroa-Comacho, Danielle Gulotta, Peggy Heotis, Cheryl Ittig, Kandy Kane, Lisa Nabi, Bill Pettit, Beverly Regnier, Brenda Tejeda, and Joe Tortora.

Upon arrival, each student was given a folder and a “Math Around the World” T-shirt that was designed by Robert Parente, a fifth-grader at Frank P. Long Intermediate School. In the folder was a schedule of the day’s events, a Math Around the World pad of paper, pencils, information for families on how to help their child succeed in mathematics, as well as a list of various committees that worked on Family Math Day and local businesses that helped to bring math into the “real world” for the students and families. There to teach math in the work setting were Bellport Head Start, Best Bargain Books, Island School and Art Supply, Jaclynn Brandi; massage therapist, Monti’s Auto Works, Bellport Jewelers and Galleries, MVP Automotive, The Variety Mart, South Country Ambulance, Oliver West Day Spa, and Ladies Workout Express.

The walls for the Bellport High School gym were decorated with large murals painted by the students of Bellport High School’s Art Club and reflected the “Around the World” theme and math concepts. From 9am to 10am, families registered, participated in face painting, and had fun with “estimation” activities that were set up around the gym. In the small gym, various community members and businesses had displays set up that showed the families ways how math is relevant in the work setting.

At 11:30 am, all students and family members convened in the auditorium to view the final presentation; amazing jump roping provided by Mark Rothstein. Mark Rothstein, who has set numerous jump roping records, combined his ability to jump rope with healthy living, mathematics, and the theme of Around the World in a remarkable, interactive performance.
