Mercy College President Visits BHS Math Class
Mr.
Robert Galasso, Mathematics Teacher at Bellport High School, encourages his
students to succeed beyond the walls of the classroom. In order to promote a
college-going culture, one of the traditions he has in his Advanced Placement
(AP) Statistics class is to contact every college or university that his
students have decided to attend and request something from that school to
proudly display in his classroom. Most schools send the traditional collegiate
pennant and several have sent miscellaneous posters, decals, stickers, pencils,
etc.
This year, Mr. Galasso was proud to learn that one of his AP Statistics students
had decided to join Mercy College in the fall. In April 2012, to Mr. Galasso’s
pleasant surprise, he received a response from the President of Mercy College in
Dobbs Ferry, New York, Dr. Kimberly Cline. Dr. Cline expressed that she was
very inspired by his passion for his students and that she wanted to personally
drop off some items for his class.
On Tuesday, May 1st, Dr. Cline visited Mr. Galasso’s AP Statistics class. She
gave each student a Mercy College tee shirt and notebook. She took the time to
speak with students about the college experience and shared tips on how to
succeed in college. The students were extremely interested in the information.
Students had the opportunity to ask Dr. Cline questions and each student shared
which college they are planning to attend in the fall. This was an exciting
college preparatory experience for Mr. Galasso and his class!

Principals Timothy Hogan and Alicia Ulberg, Mercy College President Dr. Kimberly

P. Long Students
In order to help members of the Future Teachers of America Club prepare to
achieve their career goals, Club Advisor Mrs. Plain has made arrangements with
the ESL faculty at the Frank P. Long School to have FTA club members participate
in an after school homework program with the fourth and fifth grade ESL
students. This is the fifth year that this students-helping-students program is
running at F. P. Long. The program's activities serve as an excellent experience
for FTA high school students as they begin developing some of the skills
required for a career in teaching. Crystal Mayfield wants to enter the teaching
profession and is eager to get valuable hands-on experience working with
elementary aged students. She volunteers two days each week assisting ESL
teachers Mr. Todisco and Mrs. Freiband at the F. P. Long ESL after school
program. Both Mr. Todisco and Mrs. Freiband say that Crystal is a big help and
that the students love working with her.

Flower of Hope for Haiti
The devastation on January 13, 2010 near Port au Prince, Haiti touched a
substantial amount of lives. People from all around the world contributed
financial aid, support and time to those who survived the disastrous earthquake.
Ms. Conk’s sculpture class at Bellport High School created a “Flower of Hope”.
This “Flower of Hope” is dedicated not only to the people who lost their lives
but also to those who are and have been in turmoil due to this catastrophic
disaster. Ms. Conk’s sculpture class built this memorial out of recyclable metal
to show that when something seems unfeasible it can still become something
beautiful; as a symbol of hope to Haiti survivors who believe their lives have
been broken beyond repair.
This beautiful sculpture is now displayed in the Bellport High School Atrium for
all to reflect on as students and staff moves around the building.
“The Flower of Hope” was constructed under the direction of
Ms. Lisa Conk, Bellport High School Art teacher and the following students:
Keisha Allen, Tim Badillo, Kia Brothers, Nicole Cavaliere, Rebecca DeVaney,
Deanna Garbarino, Sebastian Gonzales-Santiago, Nakeisha Jackson, Sean Kempf,

Dip Into the Inkwell and Explore Your Creative
Side
The South Country School District recognized the Inkwell Writer’s Club advisor
Don Uhrie and club member Hilda De Los Santos at its bi-monthly meeting
Wednesday March 10th.
In a celebration at Bellport High School for Black History Month, Inkwell
provided the literary component by reading poetry from such prominent authors as
Maya Angelou and Langston Hughes. Another, less prominent, but aspiring young
writer, Hilda Del Los Santos, brought her creative flair to the celebration by
reading her own original poem entitled “Two People.” Her heartfelt and powerful
words were well received by all. Other club members also attended and
participated in the celebration.
Shortly thereafter, the district requested that Hilda share her poem at the
Board of Education meeting on March 10th. Both Hilda, and the Inkwell club
advisor, Don Uhrie, were recognized for their outstanding participation in the
Inkwell Club.
Inkwell was formed early in the 2009 / 2010 school year. The club was initiated
by its current advisor Don Uhrie, who teaches English at the Bellport High
School. Inkwell was formed in order to provide an environment to nurture the
creative side of Bellport High School’s many talented and spirited students. The
goal was to create a forum that provided our students with a safe and nurturing
environment conducive towards self expression of the written word. By nurturing
the writer within our young people, Bellport High School’s Inkwell Club has
provided another vehicle to aid in the academic as well as personal growth of
its students.

BHS Students in Leadership Council of New
"Compassion Without Borders" Program
On October 22, 2009 ten students from Bellport High School visited Harborfields
High School to discuss a newly created program called Compassion without
Borders. This program was developed by the Suffolk County Principals’
Association to provide leadership opportunities for students. The first goal for
students involved in this leadership council is to raise money for Dylan’s
Footprint Foundation. Dylan Thompson a 16 year old sophomore from Harborfields
has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystophy. Because of this physically
debilitating disease students are coming together to raise money to assist in
renovations at Dylan’s house so it can be handicapped accessible. The Bellport

Community Health Fair Huge Success
On Tuesday, October 5th and 6th Bellport High School hosted a Health Fair.
Community members, mental and physical health organizations, fire and ambulance
department personnel, coaches, political representatives and students gathered
in the gyms to share their material and information. Ms. Diane Poulos, event
coordinator, organized this fair to alert the community of all the resources
available to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Parents were invited to visit the
fair during free periods at the yearly scheduled Meet the Teacher Night at
Bellport High School. The Culinary Arts classes of Mrs. Camille Masem and Mrs.
Sheila Smith demonstrated their talent and creativity by providing healthy
snacks. Students prepared food and smoothies for Health Fair/Meet the Teacher
Night attendees. Culinary Arts is part of the new career pathways program in the
Business Department.
