1,188 votes. Congratulations to Victor

Thank you to South
Country Lions Club
On behalf of the
District, Dave Seyfert, Visual Impairment
Teacher for the South Country School
District, thanks the South Country Lions
Club for their generosity in helping to meet
the educational needs of students with
visual impairments
The
South Country Lion’s club continues to be
very active in helping to meet the
educational needs of student’s with visual
impairments in our district. In 1925, Helen
Keller asked The Lion’s club to become
“knights of the blind in the crusade against
darkness,” and the Lions have been helping
to meet the needs of individuals with visual
impairments since that time. School
Districts are mandated to provide for the
educational needs of students with visual
impairments within the school day; The Lions
play a vital role in helping to meet those
needs that fall outside of the school day.
They have made two very generous donations
on behalf of two district students during
the 2010-2011 school year. At their
September 28th meeting, The South
Country Lion’s Club presented a South
Country kindergartner with a state-of-art
electronic magnifier. A second
donation made by The Lions will be
used to pay for a middle school student to
take a class over the summer at Baruch
College’s Computer Center for Visually
Impaired People (CCVIP) in Manhattan.
South Country Vision Teacher, Dave Seyfert
states, "I’ve been making requests of the
South Country Lion’s club for nearly 25
years now, and they still amaze me with
their generosity and enthusiasm. They are
truly unspoken heroes within our community.
The South Country Lion’s club has several
annual fundraisers, and I hope that the
larger South Country community would
remember their efforts in helping the
district’s students and consider supporting
them during these events.” Read

with a tour of the beautiful architecture of
the State Capitol Building. “Being able to
speak directly with the policymakers about
the budget process was a really enlightening

Advanced
Woodworker's Club at Frank P. Long School
5/10/11
Pictured below is The Advanced Woodworker’s Club
at Frank P. Long School, displaying some of
their more technical projects completed over
this past academic year. This years’ group of
5th graders worked tirelessly during their lunch
periods under the direction of club
coordinators, Peter Cisek and Michael Miles. The
Advanced club was established because of the
overwhelming demand from students to continue
their woodworking skills after they completed
the basic course in 4th grade. They learn
valuable skills such as geometric design,
advanced measurement, hand manipulations,
following difficult sets of instructions and
many other social/emotional and educational
applications.
Examples of the more advanced projects include
building magazine racks, footstools, sitting
benches, Adirondack chairs, bat houses and
birdhouses. “All in all, the program has become
so popular that 150 to 200 children will sign up
per year to participate in the program,” said
Pete Cisek. Behind the scenes, Michael Miles,
Student Assistance Services Counselor says, “the
program is designed to coordinate with many of
the individualized behavioral plans for working
with hard to reach children. It is a double
reward because the children are discovering just
how much fun it can be to learn.” Participation
in the Advanced Woodworkers Club is a privilege
and many of the students must demonstrate
appropriate behavior through their actions to
get approved into the club. “Because these
students are working with tools and equipment,
they must model all of the Pillars of Good
Character to show they are responsible enough
for that opportunity,” pointed out Cisek. Many
students will make an effort to improve their
classroom behaviors to ensure their spot in the
next Advanced Woodworkers project. “When the
child does his best he gets the opportunity to
build and experience nature’s garden as a
reward.”

Fire Safety Videos
Mrs. Pirozzi’s 2nd grade class just completed a project entitled, “Fire Safety Videos.” During their “Around Town” theme they read
A Trip to the Firehouse by Wendy C. Lewison. After reading the story, the class decided to create educational videos using the Photo Story 3 program. The class wanted to educate younger students on the importance of an escape plan if there was ever a fire in their home. The students worked as partners to create illustrations and text to explain what to do in case of a fire. They imported these pictures, wrote the text, narrated the text, added both transitions and motions, and shared the completed videos with their younger classmates. The students are proud of their work and hope their videos will help save the lives of others!

Brookhaven Elementary Celebrates Art and Supports Local Charity
Brookhaven hosted its third annual art fundraiser showcasing South Country School District’s many talented artists and musicians while also raising money for the Lighthouse Mission of Patchogue. The event, held on Thursday, February 17th, from 6-8 p.m., at Brookhaven Elementary School, displayed the artwork of over 650 Brookhaven Elementary students and highlighted Bellport Middle School’s Chamber Orchestra and their music teacher, Juliette Valenti. Parents had the opportunity to purchase framed paintings and various other items featuring their child’s artwork. The proceeds from all purchases help support the Lighthouse Mission, which services many families in the community.
In addition to parents, students, and teachers, school board members Barbara Schatzman and Michelle Cavaleri attended the event. Mayor David Pate and the First Lady of the Village of Bellport also showed their support by strolling through the school’s colorful hallways, enjoying the chamber music, and savoring some refreshments provided by the Brookhaven PTA.
Brookhaven art teacher, Michelle Procida, noted her students’ enthusiasm for the project and was quick to thank the many parent volunteers and high school students who assisted throughout the evening. “This collaborative event celebrates the artistic accomplishments of our students, but also teaches citizenship as we respond to the needs of our community by raising money for the Lighthouse Mission,” commented Mrs. Procida. She also wanted to thank Mr. Tim Hogan, Music Department Chairperson, and Ms. Suzette Fandale, Art Department Chairperson for their support of the evening. Over $500.00 was collected last year for the Lighthouse Mission. Mrs. Procida expects to meet and exceed that amount as a result of this year’s efforts.

Students Celebrate Accomplishments During Black History Month at Brookhaven

Brookhaven students have spent the month of February celebrating the amazing accomplishments and contributions of many Black Americans who made and continue to make this nation what it is today. The underlying theme is that when we all work as a team, we can make a difference in our lives and the lives of others.
By studying black history and the various
contributions made to our society, Brookhaven
students continue to learn, appreciate and embrace a
variety of cultures that represent our country as a
whole. Check out the numerous collective works
that adorn our hallways as we celebrate Black
History Month.
Brookhaven
Celebrates Scientific Inquiry
Duri
ng February our own Brookhaven elementary teachers became traveling
scientists! As part of a school-wide effort to promote scientific inquiry, teachers traveled into others’ classrooms as “scientists for the day”, demonstrating specific scientific experiments that elementary students, grades Pre-K through 3, could do using basic household items. Every teacher on the Science Fair Planning Team took a role!
The initiative was an idea that came out of the Science Fair Planning Team earlier in the year. After teacher demonstrations, all students are now invited to participate in “SCIENCE FAIR 2011” to be held on April 7th, 2011 from 6-8pm at Brookhaven School.

The Science Fair is a unique opportunity for students to work through the scientific process on an area of personal interest. It also allows students to authentically discover and learn about the world around them. Our PTA also got involved by hosting a guest presenter who helped parents understand the process.
Every year the school’s Science Fair is a huge success and numerous students who place at the school level then get a chance to enter their projects in the Brookhaven National Lab’s Science Fair! This year student projects will be evaluated and one (1) project from each grade level will again be entered at Brookhaven National Lab.
Principal Linda Jean Rozzi and Assistant Principal Travis Davey look forward to an unprecedented number of student entries this year and thanks all of our terrific teacher scientists who helped instill a love of science in our students!
Learning Clicks

Mr. Perkins' 4th grade students at Frank P. Long Intermediate School are using the newest response technology integrated with the Smart Board Technology. These take the form of handheld 'clickers' operating via Infrared or Radio signals. These clickers offer multiple choice and polling options, as well as text and numeric responses and will export an analysis of the student performance for subsequent review.
With classroom response and interactive whiteboard systems combined, Mr. Perkins can present material and receive feedback from students in order to direct instruction more effectively as well as carry out formal assessments.
All questions can be geared to fit a particular classroom subject having students gain experience and become familiar with Smart Response Technology and work as a team.

Bellport Girls Deliver to Vets
On December 23, 2010 members of the Bellport Girls Track and Field Club got an early jump on the jolly man in the red suit. The student/athletes put their schedules on hold to fulfill the promise they made at their successful fund raising 5K Race in Bellport Village on November 28, 2010. Under the supervision of Bellport High School girls’ varsity track coach, Gino Cruz, team members visited the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, New York. Club members arrived bearing gifts of needed clothing items such as gloves, hats, etc. “Our fundraiser included three very important objectives, one being to assist veterans in need” Cruz said. “I am so proud of the outstanding manner in which the girls represented themselves, their school and the South Country community.”
Many team members admitted to not knowing what to expect from the visit. Varsity track tri-captain Marina Pettinicchi said, “We knew that bringing needed gifts for the holidays would be a nice gesture, but we had no idea how moving the experience would be. There were many great stories exchanged.” Pettinicchi went on to describe the joyous atmosphere that evolved as her teammates began to sing Christmas carols to the patients. Tri-captain Caitlyn Pabst said, “I will never forget this trip. The holiday visit and conversation were genuinely appreciated as much or more than he gifts we delivered.” Tri-captain Anissa Rivera said, “I am so glad we made this trip. I always looked at veterans as just soldiers in a uniform. We learned so much about the real men behind the uniforms. I will never think of veterans the same way.”
Cruz chose this particular facility because one of his coaching mentors, Steven Lewis, is being cared for at this hospital. Lewis, a twenty year Army veteran, left his position coaching track at Longwood High School as a result of his illness which has left him completely incapacitated. “Although physically challenged, Steven has honorably served his country and has a tremendous passion for track and field that I wanted to share with the team,” Cruz said.
The team plans to make two additional post-holiday visits to Veterans facilities in Stony Brook and Yaphank. The club has already made a donation to the family of Julia Nofi, seventh grade student at Bellport Middle School who is battling Leukemia. Additionally, the club plans to award scholarships to deserving student/athletes at the Bellport High School graduation ceremony in June.
Holiday Cheer
On
Wednesday December 15th, seventeen Bellport High
School students and two teachers
went on a
walking field trip in 20 degree weather to spread
holiday cheer to some of our local elderly community
members. Some members of the Future Teachers
of America Club, the Interact Club, and the Italian
Club, along with two Club advisors, Mrs. Plain and
Mrs. Hines, walked from the Bellport High School to
the Bell Haven Nursing home to sing holiday carols
for the residents and day care participants of the
facility. It was truly a heartwarming
experience for all involved. The club members
felt that it is important to give back to the
community and show respect and appreciation to the
elder members of their community. Two of the
students that participated in the event have
relatives that reside at the Bell Haven Nursing
Home and were able to visit with their family
members during the trip.

London’s Calling... Brookhaven Students Video Conference with Peers in England!
Second grade students at Brookhaven Elementary School have
successfully communicated with a partner school located in
London, England via video conferencing technology. According to
teachers Victoria Suarez and Stephanie Maffei, the opportunity
has “allowed us to travel to London without leaving our seats in
the classroom!”
The video-conferencing experience
has enabled Brookhaven students and teachers to build
relationships with children in Mr. Paul Greenwood’s class at the
Northwood Elementary School, a London-based public school. The
experience has provided participants the opportunity to learn
first-hand the customs of others their own age living outside of
the United States. “The children’s enthusiasm and dedication
from both schools has been phenomenal,” Principal Linda Rozzi
noted. “Strong teacher innovation paired with the district’s
state-of-the art technology engages students in this wonderful
experience. Overall, the virtual field trips demonstrate how
schools can further collaborate with other schools now around
the globe.” Millie Marchese, the district’s Director of
Instructional Technology stated, “I loved it! This is what using
technology for instruction is all about. Teachers used the
technology to do something curriculum-based that practitioners
would not have been able to do otherwise.”
In their first scheduled video conference, the students from
London taught Brookhaven students about English customs and
holiday traditions, and our own Brookhaven students taught them
all about US holiday customs and sang them Christmas carols.
“It is incredibly important to us that our kids are able to
appreciate and share their backgrounds and culture at such a
young age with their peers around the globe. By doing so, they
experience other cultures and traditions in a way that is
unforgettable,” said Rozzi.
According to both teachers, “This is going to be a learning
experience not only for the students but for us as well, as we
use the wonderful technology that we have been given to enrich
the experiences of our students. Such an opportunity would not
be practical without the use of such available technology.”
The students in Mrs. Suarez’ and Ms. Maffei’s class will
continue to video conference monthly with the London School for
the remainder of the 2010/2011 school year.
Congratulations to the students
and their teachers for such innovative efforts!

Frank P. Long students go to West Hampton Beach Performing Arts
Frank P. Long students in Ms. Carrabus and Mr. Tortora’s fifth grade classes went to the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center on Monday, December 6th. The students enjoyed a live performance about cyber bullying and learned from the Green Thumb Theater performers about how dangerous technology can be if not used correctly. The actors demonstrated how camera phones, Facebook, and the internet can be used to bully people. They also shared with the students that when cyber bullying happens online you really don’t know who is bullying you. Both classes learned to be very careful with the sites they go on, the people they give their cell phone numbers to, and the people they talk to on the Internet.
