For the second year teachers from South Country Central School District were selected to receive scholarships to participate in a teacher institute co-hosted by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University’s Teachers College. The Institute in American History and Content Literacy prepares teachers who lead reading and writing workshops to blend best practices in literacy with state of the art history instruction and to develop literacy-rich history curriculum for elementary classrooms. Participants learned on site in Colonial Williamsburg as they spent six days at the historical village, among interpreters who shared their knowledge and stories of the past. Teachers were guided by experts in history and literacy as they learned how to share these experiences in rich learning experiences in the classroom.
