On July 20, 2011, John O'Neill, was acknowledged by the Board of Education of the South Country School District for his 2nd place finish in the Elementary School Science Fair. The science fair was sponsored by the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Office of Educational Programs on May 7, 2011. The science fair drew over 550 entries from 118 Suffolk County Schools. Brookhaven Lab scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects. John O’Neill, a 6th grade student at Bellport Middle School, received 2nd place honors at the fair based on a criteria designed by the BNL scientists. John was chosen by the 6th grade teachers to represent Bellport Middle School for his project titled, Gauss Rifle. The objective of his project was to determine the effect the spacing of magnets will have on the distance a ball bearing will travel in a magnetic linear accelerator. He had concluded that the closer the magnets, the greater the distance that the ball had traveled.
