The Bellport Middle School Math Team has recently completed our 2010-11 season. We have finished in first place in both the 7th grade and 8th grade competition in Division 9 of the Suffolk County Math Teachers Association JHS Math League. The eighth grade team (Emily Salcedo-Watson and Name Omitted) was in first place throughout the entire season (5 meets) and finished in first place by a wide margin. The seventh grade team was in second place for the first four meets and only was able to finish first for the year by handily winning the final completion. Sara Dunbar and Jimmy Jankowski were correct on an incredible 8 of 10 questions in the final meet to become the 7th grade champions of Division 9. Team members for this past season were: 1.) Name Omitted (8) 2.) Emily Salcedo-Watson (8) 3.) Jimmy Jankowski (7) 4.) Sara Dunbar (7) 5.) Betty Bruce (7) 6.) Enes Bozok (6) 7.) Matthew Pfister (6) 8.) Ahmed Shata (6) 9.) Devon Kollar (6) 10.) BMS Students Trip to the Phoenix Gallery On Tuesday, October 19th, 2010, 64 Bellport Middle School students participated in a walking field trip to the Phoenix Gallery, which is located right here in Bellport ( specifically at 139 South Country Road). The Brookhaven Arts & Humanities Council invited our students to the gallery to create large mural background landscapes for their upcoming exhibit. At the gallery, the students did an excellent job working cooperatively to draw, paint or use pastels to express their ideas, artistically and creatively.
The students were extremely excited about this opportunity and they did an amazing job in successfully creating over 120 feet of murals during their time working in the gallery. The exhibit of student murals along with member artists’ work among them will be open for public viewing from Saturday, October 23rd to Sunday, October 31st. A reception will be held on Sunday, October 31st from 12-3p.m. Congratulations to BMS students for a job well done!!!

My name is Demetria Guirantes and I am a Teaching Assistant at Bellport Middle School. I wanted to bring to your attention the accomplishments of some of our elementary students. I don't know if you are aware of Bellport Double Dutch, but it has been a part of the Bellport Community for over 25 years. Myself along with Head Coach Erica Martin, Hope Sells, and Colleen Harrison have been working together to keep this program going since the passing of Mr. Willie Blackmon in 2007. We have had been New York State Double Dutch Champions for the last 3 years, and World Champions in 2007 and 2008. Bellport Double Dutch was implemented to keep the children in the community off the streets and its motto is "Ropes Not Dope". We have been recognize by the Town of Brookhaven and County Legislators for our accomplishments. On May 14th 2011, we had two 3rd grade teams and one 4th grade team competed in the New York State Competition. As a result our 2nd place 3rd grade team will be representing Bellport in the American Double Dutch League World Competition in Sumter S.C on June 15-17. The girls that will be competing are Sorrina Harrison (Brookhaven Elementary), Rahmia Defratus (Brookhaven Elementary) and Talaya Guirantes (Kreamer St.) Throughout the year we do various fundraising activities in order to defray some of the expenses. The up-coming trip to S.C. will cost about $600 per jumper. We will be having a car wash this weekend and with yours and the building principals from Kreamer and Brookhaven Elementary, I would like to put a donation box in the faculty lounges to see if we can get some help.
Congratulations to

Grader Josue Arias who won the History Team Repeats History On Thursday, May 19th,
The Bellport Middle School History team again won the regular season
trophy in the Suffolk County History League. Students turned in
strong performances in categories such as Renaissance inventors,
Constitutional amendments and pre-Civil War sectional leaders. The
league title for the year was secured by a last-second correct
answer of the final question of the tournament. The History Team’s
continued success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of
its members. The BMS community looks forward to next year’s title
defense in the 2011-2012 season!
The Bellport Middle School International Club recently completed its winter clothing drive. Many warm coats, hats, gloves and mittens were collected and will be distributed to families who live in the south country central school district. Seen in the photo are club advisors, Ms. Kimberly Rodriguez and Ms. Rosemary Simone and student club members. The Bellport Middle School International Club is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. This club heightens student awareness of other cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
Eleven South Country String Students Selected The Long Island String Festival Association (LISFA) announced the selection of eleven South Country School District String musicians to perform with the 2011 LISFA String Orchestras. The LISFA festival consists of string orchestras at the elementary, middle school, junior high and high school level and features the finest string musicians in Suffolk Country. Students are selected based upon scores from performances at the NYSSMA Spring Solo and Ensemble Festival, held last June, and upon recommendations submitted by the South Country string faculty. Members of the Junior High and High School Division rehearsed at Ward Melville High School on Friday and Saturday February 4th and 5th. The festival culminated with a public concert presented on Sunday, February 6th at 1:00 p.m. in the Ward Melville High School auditorium. The elementary and middle school participants concert was presented on Sunday, January 23rd at 1:00 p.m. in the Longwood High School auditorium. Pennies for Patients The Pennies for Patients campaign is currently underway at BMS. Pennies for Patient is a program by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society that raises money to help people with these diseases. Half of the proceeds collected will be going to help one of our own Middle School students. We have already blown past our original goal of $1,000 and are well on our way to our new goal of $3,000. To make things more interesting it is a 6th Grade vs. 7th Grade vs. 8th Grade battle to see who can collect the most money. The grade that collects the most money will receive a special reward.
Lego Robotics Team Visits Under the leadership of Mr. Surrusco the Lego Robotics Team visited Stony Brook University Hospital to meet with renowned surgeon Alek Mishail and his staff to observe the Da Vinci Robot. Students were able to witness first hand in the operating room how the Da Vinci robot works and how it has various applications to Urological patient care at Stony Brook University. The students and parent chaperones had a terrific time as well as a valuable “hands on” learning experience.
