Internet Safety Presentation

The PTA from Frank P. Long Intermediate School hosted an Internet Safety Presentation conducted by Mr. Dave Perkins, fourth grade teacher.  Many parents attended and learned about risky decisions children make online, ways to filter inappropriate search results, cyber-bullying, online predators, and appropriate steps that can be taken to keep children safe while using a computer. Five refurbished laptops were raffled off to those that attended and attendees were able to speak with a technician from Ocean Digital Company about repairing computers. They even offered a 20% discount for those that came out.

Poetry Café

After studying poetry during reading workshop and writing poems in writing workshop,  students from Mrs. Olivotti-Dodge’s class celebrated their finished pieces by opening a Poetry Café.  A-4 was transformed into our very own café with a microphone for the student readers, served light snacks, and dimmed the  lights to create a cozy environment.  To honor the beatnick culture, in which poetry readings at small coffee shops were popular, the students wore black shirts/jeans and snapped their fingers instead of clapping to show their appreciation for each poem.  Kudos to all of the great poets in A-4!

We Celebrate Success at FPL

Students who achieved Gold Honor Roll status for the 1st and 2nd quarters were invited to an assembly titled Rosa’s Ride.  Rosa’s Ride is a four person musical that highlights the life of Rosa Parks. The backdrop for the play was a large black and white divided puzzle that slowly transformed into a colored mosaic throughout the course of the play.  The students enjoyed the assembly. They asked thought provoking questions at the end and were encouraged to continue the work of Rosa Parks.

Celebration of Colonial Times

Mrs. Rauch’s fourth grade class celebrated “colonial day” in their classroom.  They were able to write with a quill, play marbles, make a candle holder, make and eat butter, use a loom to weave, and compared their chores today with the chores of children during colonial times.  The colonial children worked very hard!  We also dressed in colonial wear and read and acted out what it would be like in a colonial classroom.  Dr. Perea joined in the fun and played his “fiddle” for us with music of the times.  Mrs. Pearce taught them square dancing for the day!  A great time was had by all!

Frank P. Long "Little Gardeners" Complete First Harvest

Members of the Garden Club at Frank P. Long Intermediate School completed their first harvest of the school year.  The "Little Gardeners" program begins during the first week of school and synthesizes educational learning with donations to charity, good citizenship and home grown fun in learning.  This year's crop yielded nine bags of fresh spinach, which the students decided to donate to the Lighthouse Mission in East Patchogue. Each season the program begins with basic lessons in ecology and agriculture.  To make the lessons come alive, students plant and tend to the vegetable gardens until the quick crops are ready to be picked.  Then, students wash, package and finally donate their results to local food pantries or for the benefit of the school cafeteria.   The students who participate in the program feel they are a part of something to the community.

   Connect-Ed Technology

To enhance communications between school and home, the South Country School District uses Connect-Ed, a school-to-parent telephone notification system.  The Connect-Ed system allows the district to reach parents within minutes, relaying important information to support both student and school improvement, and ensuring that parents are well informed about events that may impact their child's education.

To further enhance the home and school communication process, in case a message was missed and to provide all district residents with access, the district will begin posting a transcript of any Connect-Ed messages sent.
