After School Enrichment Program


Frank P. Long's Enrichment Program provides students with opportunities to strengthen academic skills, enhance social skills, develop an appreciation for different modalities of learning, and work on hands-on learning activities. 

Fall session begins in October and Spring session in March. Students participate in courses which are offered from 2:45-3:30 pm from Monday through Thursday.  Each course will last 9 weeks (9 sessions), unless otherwise specified.  Transportation will be provided daily at 3:40 pm.

FALL SESSION

CHESS CLUB (MONDAYS) Have you ever played chess? Did you know that chess is the oldest skill game in the world? Come learn a game that was played by kings and rulers all around the world. Chess is a great strategy-thinking game. Every decision you make affects how the game will turn out, even your first move! However, the first decision you must make is to join us. Are you ready to make your first move? (For beginners and those who already play the game.)

DIGITAL CAMERA I (MONDAYS).  Learn how to take terrific pictures using different techniques and special effects with the camera as well as the computer. The only limitation that you have is your own imagination. Please join us and have fun.  

EARLY AMERICAN QUILT DESIGN (MONDAYS) Students enrolled in this class will design a pillow using quilting techniques and learn how to sew by hand.

TRACK AND FIELD: RUN FOR THE HEART OF IT! (MONDAYS) Participate in numerous track and field events while learning to keep track of your resting and active heart rate. Play and watch your physical fitness level improve while participating in the various aspects of track and field.                                                                   

TIE-DYING TECHNIQUES (MONDAYS) We've all seen it, but in this course you will actually learn how to create it! During this course, students will learn different techniques for tying and dying a variety of materials.  This course will consist of various practice projects and each student will design and create a final Tie-Dyed creation to keep at the end of the course!

DIGITAL CAMERA II (TUESDAYS) If you like to take pictures and you like computers you will enjoy this class! All are welcome, beginners as well as experienced. We will take many different types of pictures using different techniques and use special effects with the camera as well as the computer. The only limitation that you have is your own imagination. Please join us and have fun.

SIGN LANGUAGE (TUESDAYS) This class will teach students to ‘sign’ or ‘finger spell’ their names, and simple words. They will be introduced to simple words. They will be introduced to simple ‘signs’, such as ‘hello’, ‘friend’, etc., to enable them to communicate with deaf and/or hard of hearing community members. Or students may learn just for the fun of it.  

WOODWORKERS CLUB (TUESDAYS) This course will require some woodworking skills. Birdhouses, feeders, and terrariums will be made. Kids will use the skills of measuring and will create a project to take home.

SEASONAL CLAY CREATIONS (TUESDAYS) Students in this class will create decorations appropriate for the fall season using bakeable clay. This season’s course choices will be various decorations for the holidays.

MICROWAVE COOKING FOR KIDS (TUESDAYS) Kids, are you looking for some quick, easy and fun foods to make yourself? Then, this is the class for you. From nachos to quick fudge, come and enjoy our snack in class.

POWER POINT MADE EASY (WEDNESDAYS) Learn the basics of Microsoft PowerPoint, while creating fun presentations that will be used at school activities!  You will learn how to create slides, import clip art, create backgrounds, and animation to make your presentation come alive!

SEASONAL CLAY CREATIONS (WEDNESDAYS) Students in this class will create decorations appropriate for the fall season using bakeable clay. This season’s course choices will be various decorations for the holidays.

DANCE- DANCE REVOLUTION (WEDNESDAYS) A new interactive video game that students actively participate in. This program will help students follow directions, increase heart rate and establish the importance of team work even in dance!   

CARTOONING IS FUN: (WEDNESDAYS) Learn how to draw human figures playing baseball, golf etc. Learn techniques and have fun creating your own cartoon figures. 

HOT OFF THE PRESSES: (WEDNESDAYS) Wanted: Reporters to publish the Frank P. Long newspaper. Become a cub reporter and cover your own beat. No experience required, just a nose for news and a desire to write your own stories.  Writing and publishing jobs are available.  

ORIGAMI (THURSDAYS) Japanese paper folding. Students will learn the art and technique of origami. Students will be able to complete a traditional Japanese paper folding activity each week to take home.  

MICROWAVE SNACK COOKING (THURSDAYS) Kids, are you looking for some quick, easy and fun foods to make yourself? Then, this is the class for you. From nachos to quick fudge, come and enjoy our snack in class. 

BUILD IT FESTIVAL (THURSDAYS) Calling all Bob and Betty the builders!  Have fun with geometry using pattern blocks, tangrams, and many interesting building materials.  We will explore two dimensional and three dimensional shapes, build a model city, and construct large as life structures using newspaper tubing. 

HOMEWORK HELPER (THURSDAYS) This after school enrichment club is to help students who struggle to complete daily homework assignments independently.  The benefits from this small-group environment will give them a quiet place to complete their assignments and the extra support of a teacher to help them when they are struggling. 

PROJECT EARTH (THURSDAYS) This course will require some woodworking skills. Birdhouses, feeders, and terrariums will be made.  We will engage in Project Clean-up, which is a litter patrol of the Frank P. Long property. 

 

SPRING SESSION

FUNDAMENTALS IN PITCHING AND HITTING (MONDAYS) This course will cover the basics of pitching and hitting in the sport of baseball. Students will be instructed in a step by step approach through individual drills and small group work. Batting tees, soft toss and live pitching will be the progression for the hitting portion. Stance, alignment, release point and throwing drills will be covered during the pitching portion.

CRATERS, COMETS, AND CONSTELLATIONS (MONDAYS) Did you know you could use cocoa powder to make craters, or dry ice to make a comet? If you want to get your hands dirty and learn the ins and outs of the solar system, then this is the class for you! Come join us as we explore craters, comets, and constellations through exciting hands on activities and interactive websites

MATHEMAGICS (WEDNESDAYS) What is the best part of math class?  Playing GAMES!!!! Come down to mathemagics and have a blast while we play games like 24, have multiplication races, and do magic squares.  Come down to reinforce what you’re learning in class, be challenged, and just have some fun!

INTRODUCTION TO GOLF (THURSDAYS) Students will learn the rules of play. Students will learn to estimate distances, angles, and force required to strike the ball. Students will also learn sportsmanship and proper golf etiquette.

CRAFT CORNER (THURSDAYS) Students will make a fun, simple craft during each session using materials such as pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks etc. My craft course will help enrich the lives of the students with a better understanding of the arts, visually and aesthetically.

SCRAPBOOKING (THURSDAYS) Students in this class will learn how to design theme based scrapbook pages, and complete them using pictures brought in from home.  They will utilize a variety of materials and techniques to create their own scrapbooks.
