A Little Bit About Our School

Bellport High School is located on the south shore of Long Island, fifty miles east of Manhattan.  It is nestled in the quiet scenic hills of Brookhaven Hamlet.  It serves the communities of Bellport, Brookhaven Hamlet, East Patchogue, Medford and North Bellport.  These communities represent a broad spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnic groups resulting in a student population which reflects the diversity of cultural influences in our world today.  African-American and Hispanic students compose approximately 33% of the 1,400 students in grades 9-12.  The availability of low-income housing and the historic charm of Bellport Village and Brookhaven Hamlet attract a wide array of families.  Bellport's diversity is its strength.  The multiple ethnicities of the community are celebrated throughout the year.

In response to the scholastics diversity of the student population, Bellport High School offers a full range of Advanced Placement and Authentic Research programs as well as many academic support services.  The class of 2006 had one finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The Class of 2005 had 51% attending four-year colleges and 27% attending two-year colleges.  Harvard,  Princeton, Cornell, MIT and other prestigious universities offered placement to Bellport's finest students.  Also, all students are offered opportunities for occupational training through the BOCES Technical Training Programs

Bellport's academic programs are complimented by comprehensive co-curricular and athletic programs.  Most students are  involved in one of 26 club activities such as Gospel Chorale, Outdoor Club, and Peer Leadership.  The CLIPPERS, Bellport's varsity athletic teams, excel in sports such as Football, Track, Volleyball, Basketball, and other sports.

Bellport High School's motto is "Strive for Excellence!"  The students of Bellport take pride in their school and support one another in all their endeavors.  Bellport pupils are noted for their creativity, fortitude and generosity.  Students provide service to their community through clubs, class activities and athletic teams.

The high level of parent and community involvement ensures a warm and welcoming climate at Bellport High.  See for yourself.  Come visit the HOME OF THE CLIPPERS!

Grade Point Average and Rank in Class

l.          All courses taken in grades nine through twelve are included in the calculation of

            grade point average and rank in class.  Accelerated courses taken in the eighth grade

            are included on the transcript and are also included in these calculations.

2.         Rank is based upon six semesters and is computed at the end of the junior year.

3.         Grades received in Advanced Placement courses are given a weight of 1.10.  Grades

            received in honors courses are given a weight of l.05.  This weighting is reflected

            in the cumulative G.P.A. and rank, but not in the final course grades listed on the

            transcript.  Accelerated, Regents, and School level courses are not weighted.

4.         Grade point average is calculated on a 4.0 scale using the following grade values:

 Grades/Grade Value

            A+  =  4.33          B+  =  3.33          C+  =  2.33           D+  =  1.33 F  = 0.00

            A    =  4.00          B    =  3.00           C    =  2.00           D    =  1.00

            A-   =  3.66          B-  =  2.66           C-   =  1.66

            (The highest grade given is a 4.76; this would reflect an A+ in an Advanced Placement course.)

Grades/ Numerical Conversion

A+        =          97 to 100
A          =          93 to 96
A-        =          90 to 92
B+        =          87 to 89
B          =          83 to 86
B-        =          80 to 82
C+        =          77 to 79
C          =          73 to 76
C-         =          70 to 72
D+        =          67 to 69
D          =          65 to 66
F          =           64 or lower
