Mrs. Diane Coleman, Advisor of S.A.D.D.
(Students Against Destructive Decisions) at Bellport High School recently
secured funds from Allstate for teen driving awareness. The SADD club members
and Mrs. Coleman held an assembly that focused on good decision making. The
guest speaker was Chris Memoli and his mother Deborah Memoli who spoke to teens
about the perils of poor driving. Chris was injured several years ago in an
automobile accident that left him physically disabled. In addition the SADD
club members painted 16 on the parking spots in the students parking, and
displayed 16 throughout the high school, to remind drivers that 16 teens are
killed each day in teen related car accidents. Posters with slogans such as "Be
alert - Accidents Hurt" and "Anger is one letter from Danger - Drive
Carefully" were placed in the Senior/ Junior Cafeteria. 16 seconds of silence
were held in honor of the 16 teens who would die that day as a result of teen
related car accidents. Listed below are students from the SADD Club, Principal
Nelson C. Briggs, advisor Diane Coleman together with representatives from
Allstate Insurance Company receiving a $1,000 check to be used for promoting
good driving habits.

A Signed Welcome for Hospital-Bound
Children
Mrs. Lisa Conk’s 6th period class at Bellport High School created a “Welcome to Pediatrics” sign for children being admitted to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. The students in this Studio in Art class casted their hands in plaster using sign language. Each student selected a letter of the sign language alphabet and placed them in order to spell out the welcome sign.

Bellport Senior High School celebrated Earth Day this year by inspiring our students to get creative and enter submissions to express “What Earth Day Means to You”. This was our first year creating and sponsoring the Earth Day Contest. It really made everyone think about our earth and what they can do to make a difference.
The winners of the contest were as follows: First Place ( $100 gift card) was awarded to Antero Machin for his submission “Earth Day Rap"; Second Place winners ($50 gift card) tied and went to Desirae Gooding for her poem, :”Mother Earth” and Kerin Lawlor for her essay, “Earth Day 2008: A Call to Action"; Third Place ($25 gift card) was awarded to Kaitlyn Dougherty for artwork which depicted Earth Day in a colorful and creative way; Honorable Mention (Friendly's gift certificates) went to Daquan Neal, Matt Wagner and Alex Scavelli. Congratulations to all of the winners!
In order to be fair we created a panel consisting of teachers and students to judge: Lisa Conk, Gail Freeman, Ellen Hoffman, Dan O’Connor, Rodney O’Neal and students: Danielle Christensen, Aubrey Russo, Scott Polis. The judges utilized criteria which were scored numerically for each entry in order to ensure fair judging.
The categories consisted of: Poetry, Rap, Art or Essay. The contest was co-sponsored by the South Country Central CSD Character Counts District Steering Committee promoting our pillars of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship!
Bellport Senior High School would like to thank all of the students who entered our contest and all of the teachers and staff members who promoted the contest. The competition was tough and it took literally three days to judge the submissions.
We received a good response especially since this was the first year this contest was created .We hope to continue the tradition next year and have even more students enter. The winning entries will be on display in the Bellport Senior High School Library through the month of May.

The Bellport High School Jazz Band, directed by Eric
Roeske, performed at the Patchogue Theater Saturday night. They performed along
with four other local High School bands. It was a wonderful evening in a great
theater watching and listening to the music. Even with Pat-Med’s home court
advantage Bellport Jazz Band received a standing ovation for their sound. Mr.
Roeske was the only director to include vocals in his band. Erin Pelkey made it
sound like you were on Bourbon Street. It was a great performance by all the
musicians. Thank you Mr. Roeske and the Bellport High School Music Department
for a job well done.

Llamas Y Briggs The Interact Club would like to thank all of the students, faculty and staff members that contributed to their fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Even though we did not reach our fund raising dollar amount goal, Mr. Briggs was a great sport and kissed the Llama anyway. He not only kissed the baby Llama pictured here but also the Llama’s mama, pictured below. |

Bellport High was able to raise over $500 for
the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Bellport Rotary Club that sponsor
the Interact Club have generously agreed to match our fund raising amount.
That means that $1000 can be donated for Cancer research and that is why
we all donated the money, to save lives! Look in the “Advance” for additional photos of the Llama kissing event. |
| Thank you again for all of your support for
this worthwhile cause! The Bellport High School Interact Club

At the winter blood drive held at Bellport High School this
past February 27th, students once again showed their true spirit of giving.
There were 187 students - a record number - who came down to donate blood at
the girls gym.

Pictured are Bellport Senior Honor Society Officers (from
left to right) Meghan Caizzo, Alexander Mc Kenna, Joseph Folks, Advisor, Kara
Mustafa and Kaitlyn Gabriel.
Earlier in the day, Long Island Blood Services presented Bellport HS with an
engraved award for an astonishing 57% participation rate, which is one of the
highest among all high schools on Long Island. Bellport has received similar
awards in the past, and students have been increasingly community minded and
willing to help save a life. In addition, students at Bellport were complimented
not only for their willingness to donate in large numbers, but also for their
courteous and helpful assistance with the staff of Long Island Blood Services.
The spring blood drive will take place on Wednesday, May 30th in the Bellport
High School girls gym from 7:45AM - 1PM. Members of the Bellport community and
their families are invited to attend, and help support this worthy cause.
Mr. Joseph Folks, English teacher/Honor Society Advisor and Ms. Diane Poulos,
Health teacher organize and supervise these life saving events.
