Library Engines

Our databases come to us from four sources:
(S) = A High School Package of databases is provided through ES BOCES School Library System (SLS). (S-AO)=Add On
http://xaaa.calypso.scoolaid.net/bin/vrc/vrcList?level=hs&p=h1
(N) = NOVEL New York  is a statewide virtual library provided free to the public by the New York State Library. It is currently a pilot project funded through a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant to the NY State Library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).  NOVEL databases are gotten from two companies: Gale (N-G) and EBSCO (N-E).
(P) = Several databases have been "Purchased" separately to support the BHS curriculum in specific ways
(F) = Free/Community based.

BHS Library Info

Staff:
Welcome information seekers!
Please ask us for help anytime!
Mrs. Jayne B. Johnsen-Seeberger, Librarian

Borrowing:
You can take 3 books out for 2 weeks & renew them anytime. No more than one per subject area, please.
Faculty members may sign out a Reference book overnight or for a weekend.

Photocopying:
Photocopying of BHS Library materials is free.

Fines:
We do not charge fines - but we do charge the price of the book if you lose it.  Lost hard cover books cost the replacement cost of the book.  Money is refunded if the book is found.  You will not get your report card (short term) or your cap and gown (long term) if all library accounts are not reconciled.

Conduct:
Respect your neighboring students and teachers in the library.
Students are expected to work on assignments or school related projects, or read quietly.
Food or drinks are not allowed in the library, you can leave them at the front counter.

Computers:
Computers are for educational use only as spelled out in the District Technology Acceptable Use Policy within  the District's Web Page A portion of this policy is taped next to each terminal. Your library privileges will be withdrawn for violations.  Stay on task.

Coming to the Library:
Library extra help is every Mon.
During Your Study Hall -
Your study hall teacher receives the library schedule every Friday for the following week. You may not come during your study hall if classes have booked the library.
During Lunch -
Check the Library Schedule on the Library door.  If the period is grayed out, classes prevent you coming to the library. If the period is white you should come in and ask Mrs. J to write an agenda pass for the period you want to come.  The library is closed on Mrs. J's lunch and prep periods which are different every day.
You MUST have a signed agenda pass to get into the library.  The pass should be signed by Mrs. J.  -- but can be signed by a subject teacher.

Plagiarism:
Read this and you will understand: "Plagiarism: What It is and How To Recognize It and Avoid It", produced by Writing Tutorial Services, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN

Learning Your Way Around:
Every ninth grade English class gets a one or two day orientation to the library - your teacher may have this tied to an assignment as well. BEFORE YOU COME, MAKE SURE YOUR USER ID AND PASSWORD WORK BY COMING TO THE LIBRARY AND TRYING THEM OUT! We try to cover the library's layout, the OPAC, the databases, and any other questions or concerns that come up. We want you to be brilliant information researchers when you graduate.

"Do We Have This Book?"
At School - Click on the desktop icon labeled OPAC - this is the library's digital catalog.

  • From your desktop screen, click on the bottom icon (OPAC)

  • Search using Keyword or other Toolbar selections

  • Use the PowerSearch to combine terms and narrow by date

  • Once you get a desired book record on the screen, click on the BookBag button to the right to add it to your list

  • Once you are done selecting titles, click the top BookBag button to see and print list
