Association for the Study of African American Life and History "conducts and promotes research and study of the black person's role in world history. The association collects writings and materials relating to African Americans and other ethnic groups. It promotes harmony and understanding among all people. The association's members include historians, scholars, and students. It sponsors Black History Month and sets the national theme for the celebration. It also publishes Black History Bulletin and The Journal of African American History. The American historian Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1915. The association received its present name in 1998. Headquarters are in Washington, D.C."

American Memory Project: Voices from the Days of Slavery – The American Memory Project from the Library of Congress American Folklife Center offers readers narratives from former slaves as they tell the stories of their lives.

 

The Encyclopedia Britannica's Guide to Black History – EB offers this beautiful site for you to explore – look at Eras in Black History, the timeline, articles, or audiovisuals. Lots of images and lots of information.
Celebrate Black History Month - From the History Channel -- focuses on milestones, with featured biographies.
African American World - The PBS site offers this guide to African American culture and history.

Black History Month Free Resources -  Gale Publishing allows you to read biographies of important African-Americans, take a Black History Month quiz, follow a timeline of events that helped determine Black American heritage, use activities taken from the Black History Month Resource Book, and explore African-American literature.
The African American Mozaic - The Library of Congress offers this Resource Guide for the Study of Black History & Culture.
Freedmen's Bureau Online – The Bureau’s extensive records are used as a research tool because they include personnel records and a variety of standard reports concerning bureau programs and conditions in the states.
Herblock’s Political Cartoons from the Crash to the Millenium The “Animal Farm” section of the website includes several cartoons that reflect the racial tensions of the 1960’s that exploded into riots.

Quilts of Gee's Bend - Listen to the NPR recording of the Gee's Bend women quilters and they sing and stitch their fantastic patterned quilts. Also the Sun-Sentinal's video is excellent.

Celebrating Black History Month – Time.com offers this site filled with historic photography and intimate portraits from the civil rights era.

Historical Publications of the United States Commission on Civil Rights – Both of these archival collections are from the Thurgood Marshall Law Library at the University of Maryland School of Law.

 

Black Icons Making History Now – BET offers quick bios and portraits of black Americans making history now - Innovators, athletes and entrepreneurs are highlighted.
State of Florida Task Force on African American History – This website is a nice portal into local and national BHM sites and archives.
The New York African Free School Collection - The New York Historical Society offers a site describing the creation and history of this special school and its impact on the city.  Great primary source materials.

Infoplease - lack History Month prompts this site to offer quizzes and crossword puzzles.
