CHARACTERCOUNTS!
at Verne W. Critz Elementary School

The Verne W. Critz Character Counts Committee started the school year with an assembly to launch Character Counts! Week. Mrs. Munisteri read the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? by Carol McCloud to help students understand that everyone carries an invisible bucket. In order for a bucket to be filled, acts of kindness must be done. When you fill someone else’s bucket, you fill your own bucket too. After the assembly, students and staff wrote down examples of how they have been bucket fillers. There is a display of all of the buckets in the main hallway. Since the assembly, the first graders have been writing their examples of bucket filling on stars. There is also a large bulletin board display of “bucket fillers” in the first grade hallway. In the hallways at Verne Critz School, we frequently hear the following: “Are you being  bucket filler?” and “You have filled my bucket!” We will all be working hard to keep our buckets full!

During morning announcements, VWC students and staff recite the Character Counts! pledge and the names of students who were nominated for good character are announced.

The VWC Character Counts committee also implemented a new school wide Character Counts program. We have a Character Fish bulletin board display in the lobby. At the beginning of the school year, our Character Fish was dull and gray. Now our Character Fish on the bulletin board is slowly getting colorful with “SCALES” as students are nominated for good character!

Student representatives participated in the Bellport Village CC! photo on October 18th by dressing in blue to represent the Trustworthiness Pillar.

We participated in National Character Counts! Week from October 20th through 24th  by wearing pillar colors, collecting food for Long Island Cares, and hosted an assembly with a guest speaker who focused on Character Education.

Staff representatives participated in the Homecoming Parade on October 25th by marching with the CC! banner and wearing blue to represent the Trustworthiness Pillar.
