Supportive Reading / Language Arts

The Supportive Reading/Language Arts Program integrates reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  The Reading Specialists/Consultants work in tandem with the classroom teacher to enhance the child’s academic development.  Instruction is provided in both push-in (classroom) and pull-out (small group) settings.  Following the New York State Academic Standards, a variety of strategies and activities are provided to building a foundation to prepare students for success in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

Supportive Math

The Supportive Math Program at Brookhaven Elementary School provides service for children who are in need of small group instruction with a “hands on” manipulative approach.  In a caring, positive atmosphere, promoting self-confidence, children learn techniques and strategies to help raise their skill level to make it possible for them to achieve increased success in the classroom.

ESL

We offer an English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for students whose primary language is other than English.  The program covers all four areas of language:  listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Children are taught using an integrated approach.  They learn English or improve their usage of the language while learning about science, social studies, math, and health.  Children receive ESL services on a daily basis.
