Reading Tips

*Rereading of books is an effective way to provide repeated practice and thereby enhance fluency. Fluency is necessary for good comprehension.

*Play concentration to improve sight word recognition. In order to play this game, doubles should be created of word cards. Place all of the index cards upside down with the blank side of the card facing up. The child picks up one card. Then each word must be said as it is turned over trying to find where its double might be. Players take turns. This game helps to improve memory and focusing as well as improve word recognition.

*Have your child make predictions before they read a story. Discuss the title of the story and illustrations on the cover. After reading a story, ask your child questions about the story.
