Our program is designed to help students participate in a variety of art activities.  Expressing critical and creative thinking is the primary focus.  Children are introduced to many mediums and techniques.  School-wide events, classroom learning, building vocabulary, and art “critiques” (to discuss and respond to their learning and the works of others) are also incorporated.  Students are encouraged to respond to their own experiences, work in groups to increase socialization skills, and read age appropriate art history text.

All students, starting in kindergarten, come to visit the library on a weekly basis.  A variety of stories and poems are introduced.  Students are involved in author studies as well as practicing many research skills.  All students come to experience the joy of reading and develop good reading habits.  Book  check out is available to everyone.  Recently, a new computer lab was added to the library-media center.  Students may use the computer lab as part of their library experience or under the direction of their classroom teacher at other times during the week.

All classes in grades 1, 2, 3, and special education participate in music class twice a week for 30 minutes.  Kindergarten classes participate in music once a week for 30 minutes.  The curriculum covers the basic elements of singing, listening, reading musical notation, moving, and composition.  Students in grade 3 are given the opportunity to be a part of the chorus, which performs concerts in the winter and in the spring.

Physical Education

In physical education class, the children in grades 1-3 take the President’s Fitness Challenge (including the mile run) twice a year.  The September scores help us to recognize those students in need of extra help.  The May scores are used to compare the personal growth and improvement each child has made.

All children scoring below 30% on the fitness challenge, those needing work on individual skills, or those who can use a good self-esteem boost, are invited to join our Fitness Club.  The club meets Mondays and Thursdays from 2:45 to 3:05 pm from January to May.

A variety of special school-wide activities have taken place over the years such as “Winter Olympics”.  During March 1999, each special area teacher incorporated square dancing into his or her planning, which culminated in a school-wide square dance in the gym.  All grades participated in the event.  From a physical education standpoint, the use of rhythms, the coordination of physical movement, and the utilization of social skills through interactions with partners and other members of the square were incorporated.

During the month of May, we have a special school-wide fitness program.  We begin this program with a “whole school” mile walk.  All staff and students meet outside at a designated time and walk one mile for fitness.  Each student is given a fitness chart to bring home on which to list the fifteen minutes of physical activity that was done at home that day.  The chart continues for the month and awards are given at the end of May.

Field Days for all grade levels are held in June over a three day period.  These days give the students a chance for a “fun” athletic experience.
