Nurse

The Brookhaven School Nurse and Health Office services the students and staff with First Aid Emergency Care and overall needs assessment throughout the school year.  Along with this, physical examinations, hearing, vision and dental screenings are performed.  The nurse works closely with administration, staff and parents to meet the health and safety needs of our children.  The focus of the office is health awareness, prevention and maintenance.  It is a very positive aspect of the school.

Psychologist

The professional functions of the school psychologist include assessment/evaluation of students referred to the Committee for Special Education (CSE), intervention and counseling, and consultations with staff and parents.  Consultation refers to the coordination of outside agencies (psychiatrists, neurologists, counselors, etc.) with students and their families when necessary.  The psychologist also serves as the “case manager” for the CSE and sits in on all CSE meetings, often chairing sub-CSE meetings.  The psychologist is an integral part of the school’s Mental Health Team, which organizes and participates in parenting workshops and other community outreach programs.

Social Worker

In our school, the social worker provides a variety of internal and outreach functions for students.  They include:
  • Individual and group counseling for children with a variety of needs.
  • Group counseling for children of divorced or divorcing parents (Banana Splits)
  • Bereavement Groups when needed
  • Support for students transferring to Brookhaven Elementary School from other districts
  • Crisis intervention for children and parents
  • Psycho-educational classes (push-ins)
  • Support orientation groups for parents new to our school
  • Outreach to families in need
  • Parent Skills Training Workshops
  • Liaison outreach with community organizations
The counseling is school based and helps students to deal more positively with their anger and frustration in the school setting.  Social workers are supported through district funds and grants from BOCES and New York State.

Community Aide

Our Community Aide is a crucial link between school and home.  Our aide provides transportation for parents who would otherwise be unable to attend school functions and conferences and may also transport students if the need arises.  In addition, much information pertinent to school is shared with parents and other members of the community through this individual's contacts.  With our focus on parent involvement and communication, our aide is a key to the overall success of these goals.
