With
spring just around the corner, it is time again for an update on “Brookhaven
Happenings”.
NYS
TESTING:
Grade 3 students will be taking the NYS English Language Arts
Assessment on April 26th and 27th. In
preparation for this upcoming exam, please join us at Brookhaven on
March 26th at 6:30 for THIRD GRADE DOUBLE FEATURE NIGHT:
JESTER JIM and “EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT THE GRADE 3 NYS
ELA EXAM BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK”. Students are invited to join
JESTER JIM in the gymnasium for some fun and frolic while parents
participate in a workshop on the NYS ELA Exam. Please save the
date!
CHARACTER
COUNTS:
Brookhaven students’, staff and families have been working very
hard at building character. The school is continuing to accept red
hearts with student ideas on Caring to help focus on the Character
Counts Pillar of Caring during the months of February and March. In
April we will be focusing on Citizenship. Please look for the
Character Counts letter with the purple flag attached which will be
sent home at the beginning of April. Please encourage your child to
write and/or draw a picture of what Citizenship means to them on the
flag. Students’ thoughts and ideas are read during the morning
announcements each week.
The
February coat drive was a huge success. Over one hundred coats were
collected and distributed to families in need in the community.
Thank you for helping your children practice the Character Counts
Pillar of Caring. In addition, a big “THANK –YOU” to all who
donated items for the “Help for Haiti” project. This was another
hands-on way for our students to practice the Character Counts
Pillar of Caring.
ART
FAIR FUNDRAISER:
On February 3, Brookhaven held the “2nd Annual Art Fair
Fundraiser”. The gymnasium was transformed into an “Art Gallery”,
classical music was performed by South Country students, cheese and
crackers were served and Brookhaven student art work was displayed
in beautifully matted frames. Over $500.00 was raised and donated
to the Light House Mission.
THIRD
GRADE ART NIGHT:
Third Grade Art Night held on March 11th was a huge success. Grade 3
students worked with their families to create an autograph book to
be used to capture “third grade memories”. A great time was had by
all.
SCHOOL
WIDE READING:
“The more you read, the smarter
you get, the smarter you get, the better choices you are able to
make and making good choices BUILDS CHARACTER!” is this year’s
School Wide Reading Program Theme. The
program is well underway. Each grade level has set a goal
to read 2010 books. Brookhaven students are well on there way to
reaching this goal. When you are in the building, please take a
look at the School Wide Reading Goal Board in the lobby to see the
latest on how many books have been read school wide thus far.
SCIENCE
FAIR:
Please
join us for the upcoming Brookhaven Elementary School Science Fair
to be held on April 8th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Over 200
students have committed to doing a project this year. Having this
many students participate will make this year’s Science Fair the
best ever!!!!!
JUST
A NOTE:
Please take a look at the
Reading Connection and
Math and Science Connection Newsletters.
Each Newsletter is filled with great ideas and information about
reading and mathematics at the elementary level.
REMINDER:
School will be CLOSED on March 29th and 30th
and April 1st and 2nd. SCHOOL WILL BE OPEN ON
MARCH 31st.
As always,
it is a pleasure to work with you and your children. I appreciate
your support as we continue to make Brookhaven Elementary a
wonderful place where we are “Building
Our Future, One Child at Time”.
Sincerely,
Lisa Greiner
