Hooves
For Hope
Mrs. Suarez’ class
was treated to a visit from America and his owner
Sonny Garguilo. America and Sonny did a week long
ride from Montauk lighthouse to the Sands Point
Lighthouse to raise Autism Awareness. The class had
the opportunity to watch some of the ride on line
and cheered Sonny and America on during their long
and wet adventure. As a special treat and to thank
the class for their support, Sonny and America as
well as their friends, Johnny and Sis, stopped by to
visit. America and Sis performed many amazing
tricks for the students. The visit was exciting as
well as very informative.
Hooves For Hope is an equine
program serving children with autism. It is very
committed to enriching the lives of children with
autism through equine-assisted activities.
Courtyard
Cleanup
On April 28th, parents,
students, and staff took part
Brookhaven's " Courtyard
Cleanup". It was a huge
success! Our team of
volunteers cleared out flower
beds, raked, and weeded. The
courtyard looks terrific!! The
courtyard committee also collect
over $40 in deposits from the
bottles brought in throughout
the month. They will be
using this money to purchase
plants for the courtyard.
Nutrition
Safari
On Monday, April 20th, the students at Brookhaven
were introduced to a new and exciting nutrition
program, "The Nutrition Safari". The students
were greeted during their lunch periods by a
Nutrition Safari ranger and "Jillian the Giraffe".
The goal of the program is to educate the students
about nutrition, healthy eating and healthy exercise
habits.

Second
Grade Clean-up
All of Brookhaven's second grade
classes participated in a
student driven clean-up project.
The students from all seven
classes were inspired by one of
their classmates, Erin, to
beautify Brookhaven by picking
up trash from the playground and
other areas of the school.

Second
Grade Informance
On Wednesday, March 18, 2009, to celebrate Music in
Our Schools Month, the second graders at Brookhaven
Elementary School had their fifth annual
“Informance” – an informational performance. Each
class was given an opportunity to demonstrate, to an
audience of family members, what it is that we do in
music class on a weekly basis. We performed poems,
games, and dances as well as a variety of songs with
Orff accompaniment. We even involved the audience
in several activities (and they did an excellent
job)! The performance culminated with
instrumentalists from each class accompanying the
rest of the second grade on the song “Listen” by
Jeff Kriske and Randy DeLelles. Thanks to all of
our students’ hard work, this year’s Second Grade
Informance was a great success. Way to go, second
graders!
Math
Double Feature Night
On Feb. 24th, parents of
grade 3 students attended "Math Double Feature
Night". While grade 3 students viewed the
newly release "WALL-E", their parents participated
in a presentation on the NYS Math Assessments.
After reviewing South Country's NYS Math Assessment
results, parents participated in solving real life
math problems to give all an understanding of what
their 3rd graders are learning.
