Brookhaven Elementary Celebrates Art
and Supports Local Charity
Brookhaven hosted its
third annual art fundraiser showcasing South Country
School District’s many talented artists and
musicians while also raising money for the
Lighthouse Mission of Patchogue. The event, held on
Thursday, February 17th, from 6-8 p.m.,
at Brookhaven Elementary School, displayed the
artwork of over 650 Brookhaven Elementary students
and highlighted Bellport Middle School’s Chamber
Orchestra and their music teacher, Juliette Valenti.
Parents had the opportunity to purchase framed
paintings and various other items featuring their
child’s artwork. The proceeds from all purchases
help support the Lighthouse Mission, which services
many families in the community.
In addition to
parents, students, and teachers, school board
members Barbara Schatzman and Michelle Cavaleri
attended the event. Mayor David Pate and the First
Lady of the Village of Bellport also showed their
support by strolling through the school’s colorful
hallways, enjoying the chamber music, and savoring
some refreshments provided by the Brookhaven PTA.
Brookhaven art
teacher, Michelle Procida, noted her students’
enthusiasm for the project and was quick to thank
the many parent volunteers and high school students
who assisted throughout the evening. “This
collaborative event celebrates the artistic
accomplishments of our students, but also teaches
citizenship as we respond to the needs of our
community by raising money for the Lighthouse
Mission,” commented Mrs. Procida. She also wanted
to thank Mr. Tim Hogan, Music Department
Chairperson, and Ms. Suzette Fandale, Art Department
Chairperson for their support of the evening. Over
$500.00 was collected last year for the Lighthouse
Mission. Mrs. Procida expects to meet and exceed
that amount as a result of this year’s efforts.

Brookhaven Students Celebrate Music
in Our Schools Month!

March is “Music in Our Schools Month” and to
celebrate, the second grade students at Brookhaven
prepared a performance of the music they have
learned in the music classroom. The “informance”
(an informational performance) is Brookhaven’s way
of informing our grown-ups about music education at
Brookhaven Elementary School. The children gave the
audience an overview of what it is that students do
in the music room on a weekly basis. The informance
provided snapshots of what music education at
Brookhaven Elementary looks like, not only for
second grade but from Kindergarten up to third
grade. The aim was to enrich the lives of our
audience members through the music they hear and
experience and for our audience to leave with a
better understanding of music education on the
primary level. Special thanks to teacher Mr. Henry
Finnegan and to Ms. Amanda Pearo (student teacher)
for organizing this wonderful event!
Brookhaven Celebrates Scientific
Inquiry!
During February our own Brookhaven
elementary teachers became traveling
scientists! As part of a school-wide
effort to promote scientific
inquiry, teachers traveled into
others’ classrooms as “scientists
for the day”, demonstrating specific
scientific experiments that
elementary students, grades Pre-K
through 3, could do using basic
household items. Every teacher on
the Science Fair Planning Team took
a role!
The initiative was an idea that came
out of the Science Fair Planning
Team earlier in the year. After
teacher demonstrations, all students
are now invited to participate in
“SCIENCE FAIR 2011” to be held on
April 7th, 2011 from
6-8pm at Brookhaven School.
The Science Fair is a unique
opportunity for students to work
through the scientific process on an
area of personal interest. It also
allows students to authentically
discover and learn about the world
around them. Our PTA also got
involved by hosting a guest
presenter who helped parents
understand the process.
Every year the school’s Science Fair
is a huge success and numerous
students who place at the school
level then get a chance to enter
their projects in the Brookhaven
National Lab’s Science Fair! This
year student projects will be
evaluated and one (1) project from
each grade level will again be
entered at Brookhaven National Lab.
Principal Linda Jean Rozzi and
Assistant Principal Travis Davey
look forward to an unprecedented
number of student entries this year
and thanks all of our terrific
teacher scientists who helped
instill a love of science in our
students!
Students Celebrate
Accomplishments
During Black History Month at
Brookhaven
Brookhaven
students have spent the month of
February celebrating the amazing
accomplishments and contributions of
many Black Americans who made and
continue to make this nation what it
is today. The underlying theme is
that when we all work as a team, we
can make a difference in our lives
and the lives of others. By
studying black history and the
various contributions made to our
society, Brookhaven students
continue to learn, appreciate and
embrace a variety of cultures that
represent our country as a whole.
Check out the numerous collective
works that adorn our hallways as we
celebrate Black History Month:
Kindergarten Holiday Sing

Brookhaven Elementary proudly presents its 2010
Kindergarten Holiday Sing. Pictured
above are our students performing one of the fourteen
songs that they learned and rehearsed.
Brookhaven kindergartener's did an amazing job. This was truly a
treat for all!
Field Trip to London
On December 13th, the student's in Mrs. Suarez and
Ms. Maffei's class went on a field trip to London...
without having to leave their classroom. Our
2nd grade students participated in a video
conference with a 5th grade class in London.
They two classes shared holiday traditions, sang
songs, and asked each other question about local
customs. Monthly "chats" are scheduled where
the classes will continue to share details about
their countries....The experience was amazing and
the children had so much fun!

Brookhaven's Pumpkin Patch

Students at
Brookhaven were treated to a hayride and
a wonderful walk through
our very own pumpkin patch. They also
tested their estimating skills by guessing the
weight of the Great Pumpkin located in our front
lobby. Thank
you to our very generous PTA!

Spirit
Week at Brookhaven
During
National Character Counts Week
Brookhaven
celebrated
by hosting a series of fun Spirit Days. Students
celebrated by wearing crazy hats, favorite sports
teams, mismatched clothes and even pajamas!
Assemblies were also held to kick-off our
'Catch-A-Kid' program!
Fire
Safety Assembly
On
Oct 15th, Brookhaven Elementary hosted a Fire Safety
Assembly on our front lawn. Students
learned a number of important fire safety tips.
They practiced "Stop, Drop, and Roll", learned what
to do in case of a fire, and even got to use the
fire hose. Many thanks to our wonderful Brookhaven
Fire Department for volunteering their time!
